Andrea Vogel,

Research Lawyer

Andrea is a white settler living on lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ territories (Victoria). She grew up in Treaty 6 (Edmonton), the ancestral territories of the Nehiyawak, Niitsitapi, Métis, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois and Inuit. She has been a historical tour guide, a bus driver, a door-to-door canvasser, and government office worker.

She moved to the coast to attend the University of Victoria, enrolled in their joint program for Canadian law and Indigenous legal orders. The program focuses on how colonial and Indigenous legal orders interact, acknowledging that there are plural legal systems actively operating in the same place.

Her legal work has centred on advocacy for public interest issues: land and water law research and tenant-side housing advocacy. She is new to the area of mental health law and does not have lived or living experience with involuntary treatment. As such, Andrea does her best to approach her work with humility and curiosity.

Lately, Andrea spends her time learning DIY skills like fixing her old sewing machine and propagating plants.
